FRIENDS WHO STAY: KAITLYN AND STEVE
In a land far away, lived a girl called Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn was feeling empty 2 evenings ago so she texted Steve, a friend of hers.
And he replied after 15 hours (literally).
Now, this isn't the first time Steve replied late and usually it doesn't bother her because this is a long-distance friendship and she understands Steve has his own life and a hundred things that might be asking his attention at any given moment.
But she got mad this time because honestly, wouldn't you text back if you check notifications and you see that a friend isn't too happy about something?
So after he replied, Kaitlyn told him that she doesn't like it when he replies super late especially when she's sad or something. It turns her off. She told him that.
And then Steve goes, "Well, I'm not gonna apologize for replying when I can. I prefer being in the real world and I was with my best friend so I didn't want to be on my phone".
Kaitlyn understood his point but she was taken aback by his language. Steve is not a mean person and this statement showed clear disrespect for what Kaitlyn had tried to convey.
She thought about it. Was she overrreacting? Was she being too demanding and pushy?
No. She decided that she wasn't. So, she did not reply. In her mind, she was trying to get over Steve already.
Despite not getting a reply, Steve messaged her again, 5 hours later, when he noticed that she had seen the message but hadn't said anything. He wrote , "I hope you understand. Besides I rarely see him so.."
Kaitlyn smiled. Closed her eyes. And was thankful that Steve had chosen their friendship over his ego. And spoken to her again.
Steve apologised for being unintentionally rude. He told her that he had thought it rude too when she said he should reply quick. It was as if she was implying that she was everything and the world revolved around her.
He apologised for misunderstanding her. She apologised for misunderstanding him.
Steve also told her that he had recently been questioning a lot of his "friendships" and was thus a little blue.
Kaitlyn told him that even though she was more "virtual" than his "real-life" friends, she hoped he wouldn't consider her an online thing only and would share with her his joys and sorrows.
They were glad their friendship was built on mutual trust and zero ego.
They bid each other goodnight gracefully (although Steve still had a half day ahead of him).
Kaitlyn was grateful for this friendship. Steve was grateful for this friendship. And that's what made the bond strong.
Based on a true story.
